FRYP for Professionals
This website is written by people living in Newham, in the East side of London. It’s one of the most multi-faith and multicultural places in the UK – It’s also one of the youngest - More than four out of ten people in the borough are aged 25 or under.
This section of the website is for professionals in the field of sex education –health advisors, medical professionals, teachers and youth workers. We aim to inform and resource you to work effectively and respectfully with young people of faith.
“We have a responsibility to educate and support children and young people so they can make positive decisions about relationships and sex. I know we can do this respectfully and well in a multi-cultural, multi-faith society, as long as we talk.” Simon Blake - Chief Executive of Brook
It is estimated that 50% of young people in Newham attend a place of worship regularly. For most this will be a church or mosque and there are significant numbers of young Buddhists, Hindus and Sikhs worshipping in Newham as well. National surveys suggest around 25% attend a place of worship or Christian youth club regularly [2]. It is therefore of vital importance that a young person’s faith and values are taken into account by those delivering their education and support.
There will be four areas in this section: The Understanding Faith section will help you have an overview of how young people’s faith affects their decisions about relationships, sex and unplanned pregnancy. There are sections on different faiths as well as pages exploring young people of faith’s views and experiences.
Support offers guidance on the way we talk about sexual relationships, enable young people to handle pressure from peers and what we need to consider when advising young people of faith who are sexually active.
In Links we take you to other organisations and their resources as well as significant social networking sites.
