FGM: Legal Matters
FGM: Legal Matters - This page explains the legal matters regarding female genital mutilation within the UK
The 1985 Female Circumcision Prohibition Act and the Female Genital Mutilation Act (2003) made the practice of FGM for cultural or non-medical reasons illegal.
Furthermore, it is a criminal offence to perform FGM here in the UK, or to take UK nationals and UK permanent residents to a different country to have FGM done. Any person who is convicted of this offence is liable to serve up to 14 years in prison.
