Domestic Violence

Domestic violence can be physical, sexual and emotional abuse. The emotional abuse within domestic violence can be very subtle, for example not allowing a person to leave the home or have contact with family and friends, or perhaps not allowing them to have access to money or choose what to wear.

Most domestic abuse victims are women but there is an increasing number of men coming forward as victims. People from all backgrounds, regardless of ethnicity, religion, class, age, sexuality, disability or lifestyle can be victims as well as abusers. Domestic violence can be present in a range of relationships, including heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender relationships.

Victims of domestic violence can get protection from abuse through a court order (an injunction or protection order). These can help prevent further abuse, even removing an abuser from the home and keeping them away. To do this you would need to seek the advice of a solicitor.
